Māori Kayakers win gold at ICF World Cup

It was a golden weekend for New Zealand at the ICF Canoe World Cup In Portugal.

Having won gold in the K1 500 race on Saturday, Lisa Carrington also took out her specialty race, the K1 200 last night.

New Zealand's success didn't end there. Ngāti Raukawa descendant Jaimee Lovett led her team to success in the K4 500 race. It's the first time the team has earnt a top 3 placing in a World Cup event.

Lovett's K4 crew, consisting of Aimee Fisher, Caitlin Ryan and Kayla Imrie is a new crew who has only been training together for the past few months. Last year, the NZ K4 team missed out on a top three spot, however, with fresh blood, they were able to change that around this year. They beat Poland and Hungary to secure a gold medal placing.

Olympic Gold medalist and Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki kayaker Lisa Carrington showed class in the K1 200 final. Paddling in her new Nelo boat, she managed to finish nearly a full second clear of Cuba's Yusmari Rodriguez. Carrington clocked in at 39.524 seconds.

Our New Zealand paddlers will now look to compete at the second and third World Cup  events in Germany and Denmark over the next two weekends in the lead up to the World Championships in Italy in August.

Here's the full clip showcasing both races and respective medal ceremonies.
