Māori leader urges Māori to become board members

A leader is someone who knows the way, shows the way and leads the way.  Te Kōhao Health's director is one leader who is concerned for the future development and growth of Māori in top-tier positions and is encouraging Māori to put their hands up.

Tureiti Moxon has a long-standing career in leadership and governance.  Her concern is that we need to look into educating our people about becoming board members.

According to Moxon, “There are a lot of boards, Māori boards in today's world, and the majority of these members do not understand the roles and procedures.”

Ms Moxon is currently the managing director of Te Kōhao Health, Ngā Hua Pharmacy, and trustee of Ngāti Pāhauwera Development, Tiaki Trusts, Hauraki Primary Health Organisation and Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa.

Moxon says, “People need to put themselves forward and not be fearful that they don't have the right skills and abilities."

“The main thing is to strengthen families, communities, and tribes, by being on the many Boards,” says Moxon.

There are many boards in each region or district throughout the country.  According to Moxon, these are things that concern Māori.

“Go and put your name forth to governing boards, community boards and the many boards amongst our people,” says Moxon.

For Māori in particular, there's a need to grow and train directors for the future, particularly in terms of treaty settlements, iwi development, growth and business.
