Māori Party to devise strategy going forward

It's certainly been an eventful past year for the Māori Party including the departure of its founding co-leaders Tariana Turia and Dr Pita Sharples, the loss of those two seats to the Labour Party in the elections, and for the first time pulling in someone via the party list, Marama Fox.

All of these matters will be discussed at the Māori Party AGM in Whangaehu.

There's one major focus for the Māori Party over the next couple days and that is to devise a strategy going forward.

The Māori Party continues to believe it's better to be at the table to secure gains, but the election results show the voters just don't see it and therein lies the challenge for the Māori Party.

Securing a spread for Māori at the government table is the reason the Māori Party says it works alongside National. Today, Tariana Turia is busy preparing a spread for its members at her marae, Whangaehu.

Tariana Turia says this is also a problem for the Māori Party. She says since the party moved from the back to the front, specifically, into ministerial positions, they've lost their connection with Māori voters.

So the question now is whether it was the right move this time round to remain at the table and take up ministerial positions?

Tomorrow the female co-leadership will be handed over to Marama Fox. Tariana Turia believes that is a major part in the party's progression, so too is building its membership.

As we know, food is the fuel for all good soldiers and its clear by the end of this AGM the members will be ready for the battle ahead.
