In recognition of their contribution to society and tireless efforts in their fields of expertise a number of Maori have been named to receive Queen's 90th Birthday Honours this year.
Matiu Nohorua Te Rei (DNZM)
Mr Matiu Nohorua Te Rei will become a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the Māori community in health, education, economic development, culture and Treaty of Waitangi Resolution.
For many years Mr Te Rei has played a leading role in establishing essential and core health and education services for the Ngāti Toa Rangatira people.
He was a key force behind preparing and leading Ngāti Toa’s Treaty of Waitangi claim and development of the post-settlement entity and its organisational structure.
Mr Te Rei is a founding member, Foundation Director and Te Purutanga Mauri of the Māori University Te Wānanga O Raukawa.
Professor John Renata Broughton (CNZM)
Professor John Renata Broughton will receive the honour of a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to Māori health, theatre and the community.
He is currently Professor in Māori Health, Department of Preventative and Social Medicine, Otago Medical School.
Professor Broughton is the New Zealand principal investigator for an international collaborative Indigenous Health Research Partnership studying early childhood dental caries in New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
Professor William Te Rangiua (Pou) Temara (CNZM)
Professor Pou Temara will also be made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to Māori and education.
He is a renowned Professor of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori at Waikato University and is a recognised exponent of the art of whaikōrero (oratory) and mau rākau (Māori weapons handling).
Professor Temara is one the directors of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo Māori programme, the Institute of Excellence in the Māori Language under the umbrella of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. He was one of the key founders of the programme and has contributed to Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s Māori language strategy to improve the quality of Te Reo Māori throughout the country.
Mr Charles Stuart Temane Moeroa Crofts (ONZM)
Mr Charles Stuart Temane Moeroa Crofts will be made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for leading Ngāi Tahu through critical stages of the Ngai Tahu Deed of Settlement as the first Kaiwhakahaere of Te Runanganui o Ngai Tahu between 1993 and 1996.
Ms Danielle Pikihuia Harris (ONZM)
Ms Danielle Pikihuia Harris will also be made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contribution to Māori and health.
She is the CEO of Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Inc, the mandated iwi authority for Rangitāne O Manawatu, and has been the Principal Negotiator for the iwi’s Treaty claim since 2007, leading to the signing of a Deed of Settlement in 2015.
Mr Samuel Kevin Prime (ONZM)
Mr Samuel Kevin Prime will become and Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to conservation and Māori.
He has been a foundation komiti member of Nga Whenua Rahui since 1990, established to protect Māori land through the use of conservation covenants.
Mr Prime has been recognised a number of times for his dedication to conservation and has received a number of awards including the UNESCO Peace Builder’s Award the Northland Conservationist of the Decade Award, the Royal Forest and Bird Society Old Blue award and the Member of the Order of the British Empire, New Year 1991.
Dr Charlotte Marewa Severne (ONZM)
Dr Charlotte Marewa Severne will become an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contribution to Māori and science.
She has been a strong advocate and mentor for Māori students in science and a trail blazer in assisting Māori asset-owning entities to understand and better utilise science and research to sustainably manage and develop their taonga tukuiho.
Dr Maurice Rewi Alley
Dr Maurice Rewi Alley will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to conservation and education.
She has made a significant contribution to the conservation of New Zealand wildlife over the last 20 years through investigation and the education of students in wildlife conservation.
Mr Norman Jack Mei (Norm) Dewes
Mr Norm Dewes will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori and the community.
He has advocated for the underprivileged and disadvantaged in Christchurch for a number of years and has represented Māori on numerous Boards, panels and Councils at both local and national levels.
Mrs Deborah Mary Jackson
Mrs Deborah Mary Jackson will become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the State.
She is a Principal Land Advisor at the Office of Treaty Settlements, having worked at OTS since 2001, and is one of New Zealand’s foremost authorities on Crown Land issues.
Ms Maru Eva Nihoniho
Ms Maru Eva Nihoniho will become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the gaming industry and mental health.
She founded her own game development company, Metia Interactive, in 2003 and is internationally recognised for designing and developing medically therapeutic games.
Mrs Hariata Hariet Paikea
Mrs Hariata Hariet Paikea will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to health and Māori.
She has worked tirelessly as a leader and mentor for the last sixty years, supporting the wellbeing, culture and health of her community.
Ms Tina Tangi Whaiora Porou
Ms Tina Tangi Whaiora Porou will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Māori and the environment.
She is a dedicated environmental advocate and holds a number of governance roles which include the Lake Taupo Forest Trust and Toitu Ngati Porou.

She is a dedicated environmental advocate and holds a number of governance roles which include the Lake Taupo Forest Trust and Toitu Ngati Porou.
Mrs Rahera Shortland
Mrs Rahera Shortland will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Māori, education and television.
She has taught te reo Māori and tutored kapa haka in secondary schools and established the first total immersion Māori language unit in a secondary school at Auckland Girls’ Grammar. She has also helped establish Te Ātaarangi Educational Trust, which has been at the forefront of Māori language revitalisation using unique tools and techniques, and is the current Chairperson. She is a tutor at Ngā Kura Reo o te Motu.
Ms Teresa Tepania-Ashton
Ms Teresa Tepania-Ashton will become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Māori and business.
She has contributed her extensive financial and banking experience to the improvement of Māori economic development.
Dr Peetikuia Bessie Wainui
Dr Peetikuia Wainui will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Māori, health and education.
She has contributed to Māori health services and encouraged higher education for Māori in a range of roles.
Mr Graham Stewart Young, JP
Mr Graham Young will be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to education.
He was Principal of Tauranga Boys' College from 1985 through to 2008 and has since been Educational Leadership and Management Advisor at the University of Waikato.
Mrs Pareaute Polly Nathan
Mrs Pareaute Nathan will receive a Queens Service Medal for her services to Māori and education.
She has been a major contributor to Māori and education in the Far North since the 1960s.
Reverend Raunikau Stainton
Reverend Raunikau Stainton will receive a Queens Service Medal for services to Māori.
She has been involved in the Kohanga Reo movement and has been committed to preserving and teaching Māori language and culture to younger generations.
Ms Arihia Amiria Stirling
Ms Arihia Stirling will receive a Queens Service Medal for services to education and Māori.
She has made major contributions to Education, particularly for Māori and has been the Principal of Te Kura Māori o Nga Tapuwae for 20 years.
Mr Bruce Manuel Tuanui
Mr Bruce Tuanui will receive a Queens Service Medal for his contribution to conservation.
He has made a significant contribution to conservation on the Chatham Islands, particularly in the Southern Chathams.
Mr Jacob Cornelis (Jaap) Van Dorsser
Mr Jaap van Dorsser will receive a Queens Service Medal for his contribution to the environment.
He has contributed hundreds of volunteer hours to maintaining and growing native bush over the last 40 years and supporting clean waterways.
