Māori Sports Awards Tamariki Day introduces Triathlon sport to children

The Māori Sports Awards Tamariki Day has been going for 18 years but it was a little different this year, the 300 children had a go at a new sport.

Triathlon is the new sport for these kids. There is running, cycling and swimming involved.

According to organiser, Lucy Te Moana, “We're trying to introduce the kids to something different, to Tri Māori, that's why we decided to change it up.”

The kids loved this event too despite the achy muscles.

With three hundred children participating in the triathlon, it got a bit chaotic. However the hope is that in the future we'll see these kids competing at the highest level in sports.

Lucy Te Moana says, “Hopefully the kids will excel in different sports or even get to the Olympics.”

While rugby or netball are the usual sport of choice for these kids, today's taste of a triathlon could have them following a different path in the future.
