A legend of the Māori sports world has passed away. Mackie Herewini was an over achiever in many sports, notably rugby, boxing, tennis, gold and lawn bowls; he died after a long battle of continuous strokes.

Close friend and organiser of the Māori Sports Awards, Dick Garratt, says he was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

It didn't matter what sport it was, Mackie Herewini was a natural, of all though, Rugby was his first love, having played consistently at the top of International Rugby for this country.

Dick says that Mackie was a one of a kind, who no matter what sport he ventured into, it wouldn't be long before he was achieving at high levels.

He was a beloved father and husband, who has his own unique style

Mac Herewini will lie in state at his Auckland home from Saturday afternoon, and his funeral Service is at the Holy Trinity Church in Otahuhu at 9.30 Tuesday morning.
