Māori Table Tennis celebrates 20th anniversary

Māori Table Tennis celebrated its 20th anniversary with a competition held in Manurewa that attracted both seasoned players and first-timers, but for one 74-year-old, competing in the annual event is to help prepare for the World Veterans meet next year.

The first event was held in Waitematā in October 1993 and opened by the Honourable Koro Wetere.

Hone Te Pania says, “Some of us have since passed on, so I acknowledge those of us who are now at rest.  Many of us remain though.”

The competition has seen its fair share of talent over the years.

Phyllis Hoiti first played in 1970 and went on to represent NZ at a major competition in Australia.

Phyllis says, “My grandchildren have been supportive.  They'll say, 'Come on Nan, let's play together.  So this year, I'm playing for Counties-Manukau alongside my grandchild.”

Next March she'll be taking her paddle back to the World Veterans Championship to be held on the North Shore, where she'll compete in the Over 75 section.

Anyone wanting to participate in next year's annual championship is more than welcome to attend.
