Marine reserve approval in Akaroa may compromise Māori customary rights

A decision to set up a marine reserve in the South Island has hit a nerve with the Māori Party, who liken it to confiscation.

Environment Minister Nick Smith announced yesterday that a new 450ha marine reserve in the Akaroa Harbour has been approved.  The Māori Party says it impinges on Māori customary rights.  Ripeka Timutimu has the details.
