The Master and the Apprentice: TJ Perenara on Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi

Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi of Ngāti Pikiao is living his dream. Called up to the Hurricanes squad last year after a stellar performances for Taranaki in the ITM Cup, and the All Blacks Under 20'S, he's slowly finding his feet in the Capital.

He has one of the best in the business helping him out, "I'm always keen to learn, and TJ is a real role model to this team, he's pretty much taken me under his wing," Tahuriorangi says.

Despite his slight stature, All Black and Hurricane halfback, TJ Perenara, says Tahuriorangi is an exciting young prospect.

"His speed of ball, his vision out on the field is excellent especially for a young kid, just his mannerism out there he looks like he's been out there for a long time," Perenara adds.

Tahuriorangi is one of four halfbacks in the squad alongside Perenara, Maori All Black Jamison Gibson-Park and Frae Wilson.

Perenara knows even he has to fight for his spot, "It’s great to know that when you come to training you're going to be competing against some excellent players out there trying to put your best foot forward for the team."

Our reporter Ripeka Timutimu has more on Tahuriorangi tonight on Te Kāea at 5:30pm.
