Matariki launched on Maungakiekie

A caccophony of sounds encircled the gathering atop the sacred mountain of Maungakiekie, followed by the recital of ancient prayers to herald the dawn of Matariki.

Matariki is about giving thanks, it's also about bidding farewell to those who have past away in the last 12 months, and it's also about holding on to those traditional teachings for future generations

This event was last held in 2013 but has been revived due to a partnership forged between the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, the Auckland Council and the 13 Manawhenua iwi/hapū of Auckland.

Celebrations are now underway as “Matariki Fever” the biggest event on the Māori calendar hits the country, so get out and support your local events, artists, performers, entertainers and storytellers.
