McLean to contest for Manurewa Local Board

Rangi McLean wears many hats within the Manurewa community. Today he officially announced to Te Kāea he’ll contest a role in the Manurewa-Papakura Local Electorate at this year's local elections.

It's the first time he stands with a group who have a full ticket to contest all representative roles in the Manurewa-Papakura Local Electorate in this years local elections.

McLean has lived in Manurewa for 40 years. He says it's time that Maori have a say in the area.

"So that families here in Manurewa can get some help. There are many who live in poverty, who try to find suitable housing, there are many who find it hard to take their children to school," says McLean.

The Local Manurewa Board district is home to the largest Māori population in Auckland.

McLean is a member of the Manurewa Action Team who've started preperations for the 2016 Local Council Election. He is vying for a spot on the Local Board.

"There are eight of us who are involved in the full ticket candidacy. Because they are vying for all roles, I have come on board to attract Māori votes," says McLean.

In 2013 McLean was successful in his election to the Local Wiri Lincensing Trust. The Cultural Advisor for Māori Health organisation Hapai Te Hauora says he's also confident this time around.

"There were many who voted for me. The majority were foreigners," says McLean.

When Reporter Harata Brown asked whether he had what it takes to secure the position McLean replied, "Definitely. That is what I want."

Polling Day is set for the 8th of October 2016.
