Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis has confirmed that the government will not build a "mega-prison" in Waikeria.
The previous National government planned to spend roughly $1bil on expanding Waikeria Prison, south of Hamilton, to potentially house up to 3,000 prisoners.
Last month, more than 1000 letters were sent to Justice Minister Andrew Little and Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis to stop the build.
