MFAT confirms 72 New Zealanders currently registered in Belgium

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reported that 72 New Zealanders are currently registered on SafeTravel as being in Belgium.

MFAT is encouraging all New Zealanders registered there to contact their families to confirm they are safe.

This follows two explosions at the Brussels airport, shortly before 8am (8:00pm NZ), Tuesday 22 March 2016.

It’s alleged one explosion went off in the ‘Zanventem’s great hall’ and the other near an American Airlines check-in desk.

International News organisations are reporting that a suspect from the Paris Terror Attacks in November last year, was arrested at the Brussels airport, just 4 days ago.

According to an MFAT spokesperson, “We have received no advice to indicate that New Zealanders have been caught up in the attacks.  The New Zealand Embassy in Brussels continues to keep in close contact with the Belgian Crisis Centre regarding the status of affected foreign citizens.”

Meanwhile MFAT is advising against all tourist and non-essential travel to Belgium due to the terrorism threat and high risk in terms of security.

Any New Zealanders in Belgium not registered with www.safetravel.govt.nz are strongly urged to do so.
