Motatau School celebrates 100 years

Motatau School still stands in the valley of Motatau, and has been running now for 100 years in the prominent Māori community which lies in the Ngāti Hine region of Ngāpuhi.

Although the school is now bilingual, which no longer stands on its original site, many memories were shared today by former students and teachers.

According to Pita Paraone, “I haven't seen some of these people since we left school, so it's really different now to those times, but the main thing is we are present and alive.”

The reunion started yesterday which included a centennial journey movie viewing, photo shot opportunities of former students as well as sports activities for the participants of the centennial.

The celebrations will conclude tomorrow with a visit to Wahi Tapu, as well as Waerenga, and then finally returning back at Motatau Marae for the closing ceremony.
