Mystics ready to face Magic after win against Southern Steel

The Skycity Mystics remain second on the ladder after defeating the Southern Steel on the weekend.

The team is shouldering the weight of having to stay at the top.

Katherine Coffin says, “It's so hard staying at the top of the competition but we haven't been thinking about that, that much.”

Skipper Maria Tutaia, who shot at 92% over the weekend against the Southern Steel, agrees that Coffin made a huge difference to win the match.

She says, “She's one of those characters.  Even though she's a newbie in the team, she's been around for a long time and she's not afraid to speak her mind and she's always challenging physically on court.”

The Skycity Mystics conducted a full blown strength and conditioning programme at the national sport complex, the Millennium Institute, with Sam Pervan who has also worked with Olympic sailors and professional rugby athletes.

Sam Pervan says, “They're looking really good. They've had a couple of lean years and so they're really keen to make the finals and kick off from there.”

This will be a perfect build-up for a pressured game against old foes, the Magic.

Tutaia says, “Now that the Pulse has pissed Magic off, we know that they'll be firing on Sunday so bring it.”

The game can't get any sweeter with Catherine Latu awaiting her 100th game in the ANZ Championships.
