National Sevens Highlights – Quarter Finals

The National Sevens Tournament is in Rotorua this weekend, with the best men's and women's teams from around New Zealand fighting for the top titles. Waikato men's and Auckland women's are the defending champions, the question is who will take away the tournament trophies for 2016?

The match between Counties Manukau and Manawatū was tied at 7-all, until Counties found the try line just before halftime.

That continued into the second half. However, Manawatū scored twice to be back in the match, with only two points behind the leaders, but in the end Counties won 21-19.

Bay of Plenty were first to score against Taranaki. Taranaki hit back straight away to get their first of the match. Both teams scored tries one after the other. At half-time Taranaki lead 14-10.

Taranaki were the first to score in the second half, scoring two tries in a row. Bay of Plenty hit back and scored the first try of the second half.

In the last minute of play, Taranaki were leading by nine points. A mistake by Taranaki proved costly, and saw Bay of Plenty score and win a penalty at the same time. As a result Bay of Plenty scored in the final seconds of play, to win the match by 1 point.

“We’re really pleased with how the tournament’s been going, it’s been a great couple of days. The weather’s been fantastic for us and it’s made it easy for the teams to play some pretty special seven’s rugby” says Mike Roger, BOP Rugby.
