Native Affairs - Evicted

The news of an 83-year-old kuia Norma Whaanga being evicted from her Mahia homeland belonging to her late husband's family, has caused uproar in the tiny East Coast settlement.

For the past 19 years, Norma has battled her way through Māori Land Court proceedings to try and remain on the land that's been her whānau's home for over 4 decades.

Norma's step-sister in law Nyron Ransfield, who's the chairperson of the Whaanga Family Trust, describes the situation as a squatter living on their land.

We sent our reporter Renee Kahukura-Iosefa to Mahia to get the story.
