Native Affairs - Krystal

Child Youth and Family are charged with keeping our kids safe, providing secure, loving homes when our children's own whānau can't.

Currently 2000 tamariki Māori are in CYF care or under protection placements that's more than half of all children and young people under their watch.

Their primary job is to keep kids safe but when eight children were removed from an Auckland couple, concerns were raised about the care their kids received while in the custody of Child, Youth and Family.

For this whānau, it would end in the tragic death of their 12-year-old daughter.  For legal reasons we can only say her name was 'Krystal'.

Ruwani Perera has her family's story.
