Native Affairs Summer Series 2014 - Mana Ariki

In the Native Affairs Summer Series, we look back at the best of 2014.

Tonight, we catch up with a kuia whose week in a rest home left her battered and bruised, a Vietnam vet injured in the line of duty whose still fighting for his pension and we hang ten with some talented tamariki.

Engari matua ra i tēnei po, Mana Ariki is a 216 acre spiritual complex based 14 kms north of Taumarunui.  It was built by the late Māori prophet and healer, Alexander Phillips, with millions of dollars raised by his followers.

From the 1980s they built a temple, railway, parliament and accommodation and hosted thousands of visitors and dignitaries each year.  But since Phillips' death in 2008 the movement has ground to a halt, amid in-fighting over whenua and the future of the kaupapa.  Iulia Leilua has this report.
