Native Affairs - Will Flavell

It might be called Tāmaki of a hundred lovers, but when it comes to politics there is absolutely no love lost in the electorate of Tāmaki Makaurau.

While the Māori Party has confirmed community stalwart Tunuiarangi McLean as its candidate and the Greens have announced aspiring MP Marama Davidson as theirs, the Labour Party continues to muddle its way through the nomination process.

Last week Labour ruled out failed Ikaroa-Rāwhiti nominee Shane Taurima after a report found he had used TVNZ resources to benefit Labour and urged his staff to sign up to the party.

Despite months of media speculation, today Māori TV's head of News and Current Affairs Julian Wilcox ruled himself out of the running.

Ironically, the one person still in the running is the one person not being talked about in the media. He is the head of Māori Studies at Rutherford High School.
