Negotiators appointed for historic Ngāpuhi Treaty of Waitangi settlement

Three people have been appointed as the negotiators for Ngāpuhi in the historic Te Tiriti o Waitangi settlement negotiations set to begin soon between the Tuhoronuku and the Crown.

Alison Thom of Ngāti Horahia and Ngāti Toki, Joe Davis of Ngāti Kopaki and Hemi Toia of Te Mahurehure are the three negotiators appointed by the Trustees of Tuhoronuku IMA.

Alison Thom comes from a senior management background at Te Puni Kokiri, the Department of Corrections and the Ministry of Education, she is also a former CEO of Te Rūnanga-a-iwi o Ngāpuhi. She is also a social worker by profession.

Joe Davis comes from a Māori development background and is currently a trustee of the Hauraki Māori Trust Board, Pare Hauraki Fishing Trust and sits on other iwi trusts and committees.

Hemi Toia has held senior management and advisory roles with government agencies, including the State Services Commission and ACC. He is currently CEO of Te Rūnanga o Ngati Rarua.

Chair of Tūhoronuku, Raniera Tau says, “We are delighted with the calibre of our first three negotiators, all Ngāpuhi leaders in their own right who have a wealth of experience in management, iwi development and working with Government and government agencies at the highest level.”While decisions have been made in regards to negotiators.

Throughout the settlement process, Tūhoronuku has been met with its fair share of opposition from hapū and other claimants which include Ngāti Hine who questioned the appointment process of Tūhoronuku as the mandated authority for the iwi.

He says work has begun in earnest and initially the negotiators would be focussed on the hapū of Ngāpuhi to establish their settlement aspirations.
