Māori providers say the emergency housing situation in the North is dire.
William Kaipō, Kaiwhakahaere of Te Hau Āwhiowhio o Ōtāngarei Trust says, "Whānau are in desperate situations right now. More sustainable living arrangements."
A new papakāinga complex has been in the works for some time with five transitional houses for whānau needing emergency housing.
The trust looks into the core issue of whānau wellness.
A crucial part of the programme for whānau in the papakāinga is access to wrap-around services.
The goal is to help whānau work towards permanent living arrangements and ultimately homeownership.
