Ngā Kākano o te Kaihanga Kura to be shut down today

Whānau and supporters of Ngā Kākano o te Kaihanga Kura are gathering at the school this morning hoping to find a way to keep their school open.

The Māori Christian private school in Waitākere which has been in operation for around 19 years will shut down today after Ngā Kākano o Te Kaihanga's application for funding was declined by the Ministry of Education.

Despite the funding cut the school's faculty has continued to look for better solutions to keep their school open.

In 2013, 87% of their students passed NCEA.  So questions were raised over the ministry's decision.

Craig Witters who has children attending the school says whānau and students are devastated, “We have just completed another ERO report process and have yet again achieved exceptionally well even in the face of adversity.Nga Kakano is an inspirational kura. Our Whanau are deeply hurting over the mistreatment of our children and kura by the Ministry.”
