Ngāpuhi Rūnanga chair open to PM’s offer

Te Rūnanga a iwi o Ngāpuhi chair Sonny Tau is confident his iwi will be able to reach a settlement and capitalise on the financial incentive offered up by the Prime Minister.

In his Waitangi Day address this morning John Key told Ngāpuhi that if a swift settlement can be reached, “I am prepared to look at some form of payment on account to incentivise people to act in a positive and progressive manner.”

Sonny Tau told Te Kāea that a figure in the vicinity of 500 million dollars isn't beyond the realms of possibility considering the size of the population of Ngāpuhi and the rohe.

Our political reporter Maiki Sherman has all the reaction tonight on Te Kāea at 5:30pm.
