Ngāti Toa and Whitireia Polytechnic develop Te Reo Māori App

Ngāti Toa and Whitireia Polytechnic have come together and have come up with the development of a Te Reo Māori App for the children of Ngāti Toa Puna Reo.

While the school only just opened at the beginning of the year, they're already incorporating the reo Māori app as part of Ngāti Toa's revitalisation of their native language.

With the dreams and aspirations of the iwi, Te Puna Reo o Ngāti Toa have been given these very special techy gifts to help develop and nurture the Māori Language.

The app was created by three students and it works on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets and teaches simple Māori names, colours and numbers in a fun and friendly way for newcomers.

George Parata says, “It's actually the first app of its kind if you look into the App store you won’t find another app like this for our young tamariki.  Usually they have apps for older generations and that to continue their kōrero so it's the first of its kind.”

Whitireia Polytech and Ngāti Toa have long worked together on projects and with this project in particular they hope these Māori speakers will blossom through the journey.
