Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara settlement

Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara descendants gathered in Wellington to witness the third reading of their claims settlement bill.

The claims process is now in its 21st year and even though it has reached this milestone, the Minister of Treaty Negotiations says the Crown cannot fully compensate Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara who were rendered virtually landless by the 1940s.
