No oily debris found on Whakatāne coast following boat fire

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council has confirmed that there has been no oily debris found on the Whakatāne coast following yesterday's fire on board the White Island Tour vessel PeeJayV.

53 passengers and seven crew members were on board when the blaze took place. One person was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and one for a minor injury caused by jumping from the boat. The rest escaped with no injuries.

There are several areas where charcoaled debris have been discovered on the beach.

The Regional Council, Department of Conservation and Ngāti Awa will continue to monitor the coastline over the next few days.
