Notable dignitaries pay homage to Dr Apirana Mahuika

Emotional farewells and fond memories at Rahui Marae in Tikitiki today as mourners continue to flock to the funeral of Dr Apirana Mahuika.

Amongst the crowds arriving were some of the nation's most respected figures, a sign of the high regard for Dr Mahuika.

King Tūheitia and leaders from throughout the nation came to farewell the beloved statesman of Ngāti Porou.

The Army was also there to help cater for the crowds.

Māori royalty, Māori leaders, politicians and people from everywhere coming to show their support for Ngāti Porou.

Reinforcements have been brought in to ensure that the masses will be well taken care of.

Phil Smith from the Army says, “The guys are here to serve their country as well as help the locals where we can. It's always a privilege to come up here and assist where we can.”

Tomorrow Apirana Mahuika will be laid to rest amongst his ancestors in his family cemetery Kaitaha in Whakawhitirā, where many including a group of high-ranking government ministers will attend.
