NZ kayaking pair to lead the way at final World Cup

Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki's Lisa Carrington and Marty McDowell will fly the New Zealand Kayaking flag at the third World Cup event in Denmark this weekend.

Last week Carrington gained yet another gold medal in the K1 500 race, beating Poland's Ewelina Wojnarowska. This was the only race she competed in in Germany, however, she will revert back to chasing the K1 200 and K1 500 double, honing her ability to compete at the highest level possible.

McDowell will also race both the K1 500m- the event where he picked up a bronze in the first World Cup event in Portugal. He will also be involved in the longer K1 1000m race where he's finished in the top 20 at both the first two rounds.

Gordan Walker, who coaches the pair says, "In the course of a year, there are only three or four opportunities to get to do what you actually train for," Walker said.  "That means lots of training and not much racing… and that racing should be the fun part and why you actually do the sport.  When the opportunity is there, it's important to grab it."

The K4 crew of Jaimee Lovett (Ngāti Raukawa), Kayla Imrie (Te Whakatōhea) Aimee Fisher and Caitlyn Ryan earned themselves a gold medal in Portugal, despite only being a rookie crew.  They returned home to New Zealand yesterday afternoon.
