NZ landmarks turn pink for breast cancer

Landmark buildings around the country will light up pink from October 1, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

From buildings situated as far north as Whangarei, right down to the Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin, 21 landmarks in total will join in on the month-long event.

Auckland's Sky Tower will be the most visible pink icon. The Christchurch Airport will glow pink, along with Canterbury Museum in the city centre.

More than 200 other iconic and historic structures around the world will take part in the event, as part of Global Illumination, an initiative established by Estee Lauder Companies in 2000.

Van Henderson, chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation says "Global Illumination reminds people of the significance of Breast Cancer Month and the battle to reduce the impact of the disease on New Zealand families,

“We’re very grateful to all the councils and building owners who have agreed to light up pink. Their commitment will keep help raise awareness of all the fundraising activities going on in October.”

All funds raised through the NZBCF's Pink Ribbon Street Appeal (Octiber 9-10) and through community fundraising events around New Zealand will go towards research into new breast cancer treatments, life-saving awareness and education programmes, and most importantly, women going through breast cancer.
