NZ Sevens team jersey blessing takes place in Wellington

The New Zealand Sevens team jersey blessing was held this morning at Pipitea Marae, Wellington. The traditional blessing has become a ritual for the side and Gillie Kākā says the Māori blessing symbolises the uniqueness of the New Zealand jersey.

It was a special morning for the New Zealand sevens side. Gillies Kākā was given the honour to speak on behalf of the team.

Kākā believes this morning’s ceremony sets the platform for the Wellington Sevens as they prepare to take on Fiji first up.

The Women's Sevens team will add their flair to the excitement of the Wellington Sevens with an exhibition game tomorrow night.

The invitational team will also feature members of the New Zealand Women's Sevens squad. The side was treated with the men's coach taking the training session.

The squad assembled in Wellington yesterday rearing to go, however Captain Huriana Manuel has had a minor setback with a hamstring injury.

12 players will travel to the next two legs of the IRB Womens Sevens World Series in Atlanta which will take place n the 15th and 16th of this month.
