Oil-gas industry delegates confronted by protesters

Representatives of the oil and gas industry are in Auckland for the NZ Petroleum Summit which kicked off at Skycity today.

At the same time, around 600 protesters, who are at the conclusion of a protest march which began on Saturday at Cape Reinga, arrived at the summit to voice their opposition to deep sea oil drilling.

Statoil is a Norwegian company and was granted a permit to test for oil in a 1000km2 area off the Northland Basin.

The main message to 'leave the seabed alone' was obvious, however concerns around on-land activity were also evident.

Now that the protesters have concluded their four-day protest, there is no doubt they will continue to voice their opinions against deep sea oil drilling.
