Ōpōtiki Mayor calls for an end to speculation

As police investigations continue into allegations of a sexual nature involving students from Ōpōtiki College the Mayor has called for an end speculation regarding the case.

Ōpōtiki Mayor, John Forbes says the community is close knit and understandably concerned about the allegations.

He says, “The priority of all our community is the safety and well-being of all of our young people. We are a close community and will be providing support to students, their families and the school.”

Forbes says he has contacted police and community members and is confident police are acting quickly and taking the allegations seriously.

“I understand they are in the initial phases of their investigation and they are working closely with the young people concerned, their families, the school and other agencies to ensure the proper support and resources are in place.”

The Police comment to the public has also been re-emphasised that there is no indication any of the alleged offending occurred at the school or involved any school staff.

He says, “Opōtiki College is a good school that cares about its students. We know they are supporting students, parents, whānau and teachers at this time.”

Meanwhile, police say they are progressing with the investigation and relevant agencies have stepped in to assist those affected.
