Papua New Guinea kicks-off 15th Pacific Games

After years of preparation by Papua New Guinea, the 15th Pacific Games opening ceremony has kicked off in the nation's capital, Port Moresby.

Hundreds of athletes have come from 24 countries to participate in 28 sports.  The event's theme was tied to the local region's Hiri trade, which formed an important part of the culture of the Motu people of Papua New Guinea.

Homage was paid to the trade relationship between the Motuan and Gulf Province people of the South Coast of Papua.

There were around 800 to 900 performers who formed part of the total cast of 3,000 staff.

Football will be one of the first sports to kick off the games.
