Police urge drivers to take care on icy roads

Another cold snap has hit the country again this week and Southern District Police are urging all motorists to take care while driving and to delay non-essential travel as much as possible.

From black ice in Invercargill, to snow in Dunedin and Central Otago, road conditions are less than ideal across the district.

Ice and snow have also covered areas such as Whakatāne and Rotorua overnight with locals posting photos to social media.

Top tips for the road if you need to travel:

  • Reduce your speed
  • Increase following distance
  • Ensure all windows are clear from ice/snow before driving
  • Use snow chains where necessary
  • If you have to brake, gently press your brakes rather than slamming them on

Motorists should check out their local council websites and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) website for more information on road conditions and closures.
