Gallery: Poroti springs water pump vandalised

A water pump at Poroti springs owned by New Zealand Spring Water Ltd was vandalised overnight with graffiti messages.

Spray painted are words like 'F*** off Pākeha.' and 'F*** off Chinaman.'

Te Kāea has contacted the New Zealand offices of New Zealand Spring Water Ltd and they are aware of the incident, however are not prepared to make comment.

Whangarei police say they have not yet received any complaints in regards to the issue.

Two years ago an Environmental Court decision gave the Whangarei District Council, the Maungatapere Water Company and Zodiac Holdings an allowance to take over 20,000 cubic metres per day, for 35 years.

It's a decision that Mana whenua, Te Uriroroi, Te Parawha and Te Mahurehure ki Te Whatitiri have always opposed and have long been in deliberation over the rangatiratanga and kaitiakitanga of those springs.

We spoke to Whatitiri Maori reserves trust chair Taipari Munroe but he did not want to give comment until he had met with Iwi on the issue.
