By Maiki Sherman

A scrub fire in Poutu, opposite South Head on the Kaipara Harbour, is believed to have been deliberately lit.

A spokesman for the northern Fire Service told Te Kāea they believed at least six small fires were lit on purpose and rural fire staff from the Whangārei/Kaipara district were investigating.

The blaze was reported at 5.20am and was under control by 9am. Four appliances were called to the scene, including a dozen fire fighters, who were helped by rural volunteers.
