Powerlifter Joe Whittaker determined to reach goal

NZ Powerlifter Joe Whittaker of Ngāpuhi has his sights set on a total 900kg at this year's National Classic Powerlifting Championships held in August. He has only been in the sport for three years but adds his determination has allowed him to set records in NZ.

He is one of NZ's top powerlifters in his category and the current champion won't stop until he reaches his goal.

Because today's event is the NZ Fitness Expo, he will use this as a platform to prepare for Nationals.

The former NZ U18s School boys’ player's rugby career ended with a serious calf muscle injury, but his dad James Whittaker says his son's determination to keep playing some form of sport lead him to powerlifting.

He has another five weeks to prepare for nationals.
