Rāhui Pōkeka midget teams aim to maintain Waka Ama winning streak

Rāhui Pōkeka Waka Ama Club took to Puketirini Lake today in Huntly to prepare for the National Waka Ama Competition in Karāpiro next week.

The club's midget teams have consistently placed in top spots for the past four years, and they hope to keep that tradition alive.

They may be small in size but the little paddlers are preparing for a big challenge.

Coach Kiki Kihi says, “Our youngest kids teams are Puketirini Paopao, Puketirini Puhi and Puketirini Putiputi and they are all in the Midget division.”

“We have been fortunate to be placed with medals in the past, which our kids have been thrilled with, now they have become use to it,” says Kihi.

Arihia Kihi and her team mates already know what they need to focus on.  Gaining placings at the national competition for the last four years, Kihi says teamwork is the key.

As the saying goes, "A kūmara never boasts about its own sweetness."

Waka Ama Nationals kick off next week at Lake Karāpiro, where they hope to be victorious again.
