Rangitoto win Grand Final on buzzer

In the Boys final of the SAS Secondary Schools Basketball Nationals held at the Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North this weekend.

Rangitoto won the match in the final second of the final against the home side, Palmerston North Boys’ High School, to take the trophy for the best boys’ team of 2016.

Rangitoto, in the final second won the match and were crowned back-to-back champions, winning 82 – 80.

The 2015/2016 winners went on to be unbeaten in this year’s tournament and shot well in the first half of the final. It was a more successful year for the second placed team, who just last year came 11 place. This year’s Boys MVP was Samuel Waardenburg, from Rangitoto College.

In the Girls final, last year’s winners also came back to win this year. St Peter’s Cambridge beat Mt Albert Grammar in the final, 68 - 53 was the full time score.

One of the standout players for the winning side in the match was also one of the youngest of the competition, Charlisse Leger-Walker who is a Year 10 student. Last year’s winners also have a young team, who are considered to go on and win a few more titles with the same team in years to come.

Leger-Walker was also named MVP this year.
