Removal of mangroves in Manurewa in full swing

The Manurewa community including the Auckland Council have begun removing mangroves from the Puhinui stream 2 weeks ago.

Today Treesafe's heavy machinery rolled in to do their part, including a helicopter to transfer the piles of cut down mangroves to be discarded of.

According to Dave Graham of Treesafe, “Our aim today is to fly 1 hectare which is cut and stacked already, done over the last two weeks.”

Manurewa Marae board member Tunuiārangi McLean was on site observing, and recalling the day when one of the marae members proposed the idea of clearing the mangroves and having waka ama and swimming races out on the Puhinui.

Tunuiārangi Mclean says its early stages yet so there's plenty more work ahead for the community.
