Resurgence of Māori Tennis

Indeed, there seems to be resurgence to the glory days of old for Māori tennis, after overcoming a number of challenges over the years.

With the help of the victorious Ngāti Tūwharetoa descendants, Kyle Butters and Paige Hourigan, walking away as NZ U18 champions at the nationals held this week it has made it clear Māori still have a strong Involvement in the sport of tennis.

However Dick Garrett, CEO of Aotearoa Māori Tennis, says there is still a lot of work to be done.

Just like all professional sports, Garrett says that money still remains an issue for a sport looking to grow its Māori base and  believes more club support is key.

He adds the wins by Hourigan and Butters have come at a perfect time as Māori tennis heads into its 87th tennis championships.
