Roads closed due to heavy snow on the East Coast

Heavy snow in Gisborne and surrounding areas has lead to various road closures.

SH2 Waioeka Gorge, one of the main routes to Gisborne, remains closed due to snow and icy roads.

Contractors are monitoring the road however it is not expected to reopen for some time.

The only other way to enter the town is vis SH35, the coastal route around the East Cape from the Bay of Plenty.

The freezing cold weather blanketing Gisborne wasn't the only issue, at around 2am this morning many houses experienced a power cut.

The largest amounts of snow are expected about the hill country between Gisborne and Mohaka, where another 20 to 40cm of snow might accumulate above 400m.

Just this morning the MetService stated "A cold southerly flow covering the country is spreading wintry showers over central, southern and eastern parts of the North Island. The heavier, more frequent showers that were affecting northern Hawkes Bay and southern parts of Gisborne have moved away to the east and the warning for heavy snow is now lifted. However, further lighter snow showers are expected and another 5cm is possible above 300 metres this morning and early afternoon about the hill country between Gisborne City and Mohaka."
