Rotorua Māori-medium school achieves 100% pass rate

Māori-medium school Te Koutu in Rotorua has achieved a 100% pass rate for NCEA Levels 1 and 2 for 2015. Despite this massive achievement, Principal Uenuku Fairhall wants to see a pass rate for all levels and says that this is achievable.

Te Koutu is a Māori-medium school which follows the Te Aho Matua policy with students achieving a 100% pass rate.

“We have a small school roll so we're able to provide appropriate support and guidance for each student,” says Te Koutu principal, Uenuku Fairhall.

10 Year 11 students from Te Koutu passed NCEA Level 1 last year. 23 Year 12 students from Ruamata passed NCEA Level 2.

John Paul College had more than 11% of the students in each year picking up a high achievement.  Principal Patrick Walsh says this is the current trend of his Māori and Pacific students.

Uenuku Fairhall believes schools need to make students want to succeed in education.

“Some children are on course, some may be distracted and sometimes our own strategy for a child may be unsuitable.”

Overall all schools in the Rotorua area saw improvements in student achievement rates according to the 2015 NCEA data.
