Gallery: Rugby Sevens AIMS championship gives small schools a voice

The girls from Te Teko School in the Eastern Bay of Plenty didn’t want to play netball this year in the AIMS International sporting championships games, instead they traded in their netball shoes for rugby boots in a bid to play in the Rugby Sevens tournament at Waipunga Park, Welcome bay.

Tony Holland, Principal of Te Teko School was proud of his students saying, “We may be a small school but what the AIMS games provides for our tamariki is the experience and this year it’s the first time we have entered our girls team in this section of the championships.”

The school has been travelling every day to the sevens rugby tournament. This year there has seen record numbers with teams coming as far as Auckland to participate in this section of the AIMS games.

New Zealand selectors are in attendance watching the future talent of the sport in Tauranga.

Mr Holland hopes next year they can enter their children into other sports being offered at the AIMS games which is held annually with 7500 students representing 228 schools in 18 sports catering to intermediate students.
