Rumbling heard near Ohinemutu

Ohinemutu resident Lani Kereopa says she awoke to a rumbling sound early this morning which she believes came from the mouth of the Utuhina River which flows into Lake Rotorua.

“It was scary,” says Ms Kereopa who has grown up in the village and still resides there with her family.

She described what she heard as rumbling with extremely loud bangs which began at around 4:30 am.

Ms Kereopa evaluated her family and headed to the car park below Rotorua Hospital after the event where she posted a live update on her Facebook page.

Ohinemutu is a Māori village 10 minutes from downtown Rotorua located in an active geothermal area.
