Serious allegations against CYF youth facility

It's alleged the R18 movie, 50 Shades of Grey, was shown to youth at a South Auckland Youth Justice Facility under the management of Child, Youth and Family (CYF).

New Zealand First MP Darroch Ball received information containing serious allegations of misconduct at Korowai Manaaki Youth Facility and wants answers from the government.

Security was tight today at the Korowai Manaaki Youth Facility.  But allegations have been made that security on the inside is lacking.

Ball says, “We have a situation where the Youth can do what they want.  There is favouritism of some youth, bringing in MP3 players even in secure cells.”

A former employee of Korowai Manaaki told Te Kāea and MP Darroch Ball that she had concerns about the facility and the way it was run.

She took her allegations to her manager but says nothing was done.

Ball says, “We've also got some youth there that are sentenced and waiting to move on to adult prisons.  So obviously the environment isn’t good, and if these allegations are true then it is a holding pen to move criminals on or for future criminals in our community.”

It's alleged that some in the residence watched the movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, even though it's an R18 movie.

Ball has challenged the Minister of Social Development, Anne Tolley.

Ball says, “Tolley needs to step up and she needs to make sure there is some oversight so that this is a safe facility if these allegations are true.”

Anne Tolley says, “I will investigate it.”

So it's a waiting game to see if Korowai Manaaki can find solutions to move forward.
