Success for Māori wool handlers at National Championships

New Zealand has won two out of three Trans-Tasman shearing and wool handling tests during the Australian National Shearing and Wool Handing Championships in Hamilton, VIC.

Wool handlers, Sheree Alabaster and Joel Henare and blades shearers Tony Dobbs and Brian Thomson were the big successes on Saturday.

It was a significant moment for former World Champions Alabaster, of Taihape, and Dunedin based Henare, from Gisborne.

Together, they beat Australians Sarah Moran and Tara Smith by over three points, avenging the Australian pair's defeat of 2014-2015 Kiwi teams Ronnie Goss and Keryn Herbert at the Golden Shears in Masterton last March.

Wool Handling legend Joanne Kumeroa was also honoured at the competition. Kumeroa passed away earlier this year and spent considerable parts of her career working in western Victoria around Hamilton.
