The Captain Cook statue in Tūranga Gisborne has been vandalised yet again over the weekend, raising questions on whether or not it should be moved, following national and international movement to remove colonial statues as symbols of colonisation and oppression.
Tairāwhiti iwi are calling on the Gisborne District Council to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and their partnership with iwi, following a decision by council to re-instal two new Endeavour replica monuments without public or iwi consultation.
Gisborne district councillors have voted to install two new replica ships of Captain Cook’s Endeavour, committing $28,000 of financial support for the build, while voting against consultation with Tairāwhiti iwi and the wider public.
