Tauranga families get helping hand

House-less families in Tauranga have been given the chance to get back up on their feet with the help of Whare Tauranga.

The initiative is managed by Te Tuinga Support Services. Pikiteora Whanau-Russell, a social worker for the service says their kaupapa is about communities helping communities.

Three months ago Te Tuinga support services were loaned a vacant office building rent free by the Tauranga Moana Maori Trust Board. It is a place where house-less families in need can go.

A worker for Te Tuinga, Rangi Ahipene says, "There is no cost for them to stay here, however, they contribute with food."

Up to four families can stay at one time.  Two families, including five children, are currently staying in the office building.

Te Tuinga Support Services are looking sharing their Whare Tauranga model with other towns and cities in New Zealand.

Waiariki reporter, Mere McLean has more about Whare Tauranga tonight at 5:30pm on Māori Television.
